HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — Ken Leeds, of Millville, stood at a table and maneuvered sheets of balsa and foam core materials through a mechanical saw, using computer-designed templates placed on top of the wood as his guide.

He numbered each completed piece and ensured they fit together into the three-dimensional design intended. The pieces would then be boxed and shipped to a boat manufacturer in Missouri for assembly.

The Mahogany Co. makes prefabricated fiberglass and core materials to the manufacturer’s specifications and ships them out in kits, said CEO George M. Aaron, of Mays Landing. From there, boat companies and other users of composites around the country put the pieces together to manufacture and sell the finished product.

Over more than 60 years in business, the company’s fortunes have followed those of the yacht and boating industry it supplies, enjoying its boom years and weathering its storms, none perhaps worse than the severe downturn of the past four years.
